The government of Tamil Nadu has launched a Solar powered Green House scheme. Three lakh houses with solar-powered lighting systems over a period of 5 years will be constructed under this scheme. The system used LED lights for houses and was aimed to benefit the poor in rural areas. One lakh street lights in village panchayats were also energized through solar power for a period of 5 years up to 2016. The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy provided a subsidy of 8.1 crore rupees for implementation.
