Silent Valley Conservation

In the year 1977, the government of Kerela has accepted for the construction of a hydroelectric project at Silent Valley. However, the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) had conducted a study on the potential impacts of that project on the environment and found that it would completely destroy the evergreen forest. The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) also started a movement against the construction of this project. After which, they received political support from a lot of powerful politicians, including Indira Gandhi, who came into power and rejected the Kerela government’s proposal for the same.
